Overview

On this extensive safari, you visit preeminent tribes of Northern Tanzania: Maasai, Wameru, Sonjo, Sukuma, Datoga and Hadzabe. You are introduced to their cultures in visits to their villages and on excursions on foot in the environment. In addition to these traditional lifestyles, you also experience modern towns to complete your experience of the African way of life. Along the way you also discover Africa astonishes nature and the magnificent scenery, in particular during your safaris in some of Africa’s most famous national parks.

Tour Plan

Day 1: The Modern African City: Arusha

You start the day with a short Swahili course to help you connect with Tanzanian people during your journey. The rest of the day you spend on a guided tour through Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit, but most of all a small modern African city. You go into the downtown area of the city, visit Soko-kuu, the great market, have a look at local businesses and see residential areas.

Day 2: Wameru tribe

You visit Mulala, a beautifully located village of the Wameru tribe, about 30km from Arusha on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Meru. You see the local cheese dairy, bakery, stores and farms. Then you go on a hike through the lush surroundings to Masisha River.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park

In the morning you leave Arusha and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. The rest of the day you spend on a game drive through this scenic national park on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. You experience the groundwater forest, open forests, grassland and the soda lake and observe animals like elephants, giraffes, impalas, hippos, and maybe even some lions.

Day 4: A Crossroad of Cultures: Mto wa Mbu

Despite its small size and the peripheral location, people of about 250 of Tanzania’s 270 tribes live in Mtowambu. You go on a guided tour through Mtowambu and see some examples of these different cultures and of the local agriculture.

Day 5: Ancient Agriculture and Maasai

On your drive from Mtowambu to Ngare Sero, you stop at Engaruka to visit the ruins of what was a prosperous village in the 15th century and their intricate irrigation system. You then continue to Ngare Sero on Lake Natron. There, you visit a cultural boma of the Maasai, the most famous of Tanzania’s tribes. In the evening, you make an excursion to Lake Natron which is a preeminent breeding site for both Lesser and Greater Flamingos in East Africa.

Day 6: Sonjo (Batemi) tribe

On a bumpy road, you drive up the slope of the Great Rift Valley and enjoy stunning views. In the hills of Loliondo, you visit a village of the Sonjo tribe and are introduced to their culture. In the afternoon, you continue your journey to Waso, the rural center of the Ngorongoro district.

Day 7: Serengeti National Park

After a bumpy drive through Loliondo’s diverse landscape, you arrive at Serengeti National Park. You explore the endless plains of the Serengeti on a game drive and observe many different animals like wildebeests, zebras, and different antelopes. With some luck you also spot lions looking for prey from a kopje.

Overnight you stay at the Seronera Wildlife Lodge in the heart of the Serengeti on full board basis.

Day 8: Serengeti National Park

You spend another day exploring the Serengeti and its incredible wildlife on a game drive. On your way, you pass along the Grumeti River where hippos and crocodiles live and that attracts many more beasts.

Overnight you stay at Speke Bay Lodge on the shore of Lake Victoria, on full board basis.

Day 9: Modern Fishing Village

In the morning you visit a fishing village next to the town of Lamadi that was established on the shore of Lake Victoria only recently. After an excursion in traditional canoes, you go on a guided tour through the village. The afternoon is at your leisure to relax at Speke Bay Lodge on full board basis.

Day 10: Sukuma tribe

On a full day trekking tour, you visit homesteads of Sukuma people and a traditional healer. At the end of your hike, you enjoy the cultural programme in a Sukuma village with traditional dances.

Day 11: Serengeti National Park

You enjoy another breathtaking game drive as you cross the endless plains of the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You observe the herds of wildebeests and the graceful antelopes and maybe even predators like the cheetahs.

Overnight you stay at the Rhino Lodge on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater on full board basis.

Day 12: Maasai in the Ngorongoro Highlands

You experience the Maasai way of life on a trekking tour through the Ngorongoro Highlands from Nainokanoka to the Empakaai Crater. Along the way you see Maasai homesteads and Maasai guarding their livestock on the fertile pastures of the Ngorongoro Highlands. In between you may also find some zebras, antelopes and other wild animals roaming in the Embulbul Depression.

Instead of the trekking tour, you have the option to go on a game drive on the floor of the famous Ngorongoro Crater for an additional fee. Ngorongoro Crater is considered a natural wonder due to its abundance and variety of wildlife.

After the trekking tour you drive to Karatu where you stay overnight at Sumawe Suites on full board basis.

Day 13: Datoga tribe

You go to the area of Lake Eyasi where you visit the Datoga, a small tribe living on the shores of Lake Eyasi from the North to the Southeast. First you visit an onion plantation exporting all over East Africa. Then you see blacksmiths, the traditional Datoga handicraftsmen, who produce various tools, arrowheads, and jewellery.

In the evening, you go for a sunset walk to Lake Eyasi.

Day 14: Hadzabe tribe

Early in the morning, even before breakfast, you head out into the bush with the Hadzabe. The Hadzabe who are suggested to originate in Southern Africa are the last hunter gatherers in East Africa. They show you how they find fruit, berries and other staples and hunt animals using bows and arrows.

In the afternoon, you drive back to Arusha.

With 260 tribes, 125 ethnic groups and more than 100 spoken languages Tanzania is the linguistically most diverse country in Africa.

Best Time to Travel

Generally, the best times to travel is from June to February with occasional rains in November. January and February are good months to travel, if you are keen to see the wildebeest in the Serengeti. During this period the wildebeest spend their time on the short grass plains of the southeastern part of the ecosystem, grazing and giving birth to approximately 500,000 calves within a 2 to 3-week period.
