Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s most vast and spectacular treasures. Located around 6 hours’ drive from Dar es Salaam, the park covers more than 30,000 km², making it one of Africa’s largest protected reserves. A true sanctuary of biodiversity, Nyerere is a destination of choice for safari enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
One of the highlights of the park is the Rufiji River, which flows majestically through these wild lands. The Rufiji is a source of life for many animal species and offers visitors a unique safari experience: the boat safari. From the calm waters of the river, travelers can observe up close hippos basking, crocodiles gliding silently through the water and a multitude of water birds, including kingfishers, herons, storks, and majestic African fish eagles.
On land, Nyerere Park is home to exceptional wildlife. The vast plains and forests are home to herds of elephant, giraffe, buffalo, and large concentrations of lion, making Nyerere one of the best places to see the king of animals. Leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs add to the excitement of overland safaris. Zebra and wildebeest are also frequently spotted.
The park is also rich in plant diversity, with dense forests, grassy savannahs and swampy areas providing an ideal habitat for a wide variety of animals. This diversity makes every safari unique and surprising, whether by 4×4, on foot or by boat.
The best time to visit Nyerere National Park is between June and October, during the dry season. At this time of the year, the animals gather around the waterholes, making observation easier and more spectacular. The climate is pleasant, and the trails are in good condition, guaranteeing comfortable and memorable adventures.
