Lake Natron is a shallow lake in the Great Rift Valley on the border to Kenya. Its reddish water, coloured by the special algae growing in the strongly alkaline water, and the hot, arid surrounding give it an almost lunar atmosphere.
But thanks to the algae, Lake Natron is the most important breeding ground for Lesser Flamingos in Eastern Africa.
Tens of thousands of Lesser Flamingos as well as Greater Flamingos come to Lake Natron to breed.
To the south of the lake rises Oldoinyo Lengai, an active volcano 2886 m high that the Maasai revere as the mountain of Gods.
